They've already signalled their intention to appeal.
While I don't condone the chanting, you do wonder where the RFL have been for the last 30 years when there have been plenty of "Player X takes it up the..." chants and songs about players being paedophiles?

That being said, £40k seems like a hell of a lot of money for the actions of a very small minority of fans who took part in this chanting. I would also suggest that abusive chanting goes on at most grounds in Rugby League, whether against opposition fans or players alike. I have heard the likes of Sean Long, Barrie McDermott, Keith Senior, Iestyn Harris and so on getting abused for various reasons by various crowds Live on Sky Sports and why are those incidents any different?
What could our club have done to prevent this chanting? Very little and I would suggest that the only way to get this sort of behaviour off of the terraces at Cas or elsewhere is to educate the fans that foul and abusive language will not be tolerated, something which Cas have been doing a great deal of this season (and even more so since this incident occurred).
Unfortunately I don't see the fine being overturned and I think it's another notch against us for the franchise applications.
One thing I would point out is this quote from Gareth Thomas earlier this year:
"There have been a couple of wolf whistles when I've been warming up for the Blues, but I can take that, just like I'd expect jeers if I dropped the ball. Part of a sportsman's job is taking banter from the crowd. And we joke about it all the time in the team. The guys see someone gorgeous reading the news and say 'She's really smart, what do you reckon, Alf?' That's not homophobia. We're so politically correct in this society that we see it where it isn't."
The chanting wasn't malicious or threatening and I'm sure the people involved thought nothing of it at the time other than to perhaps distract him. I don't think the fans that chanted at Cas are any more homophobic than anywhere else, but that's going to be the image that is portrayed from all of this. We're going to be presented as a bigoted town where the residents know no better which is absolutely incorrect IMO.

- Now have a CD that they play every time they hear any obscene chanting
- Have installed more CCTV around the ground
- Have stewards/police near every exit and more in general around the ground.
Gareth Thomas has fined this club himself, Shaun Long and numerous other players have had a bit of banter towards them for being fat or whatever and taken it on the chin and haven't gone running to the press.
The same in football applies, the RFL are so biased towards the big clubs it is just outrageous.

=#0080FFI don't think it was malicious, but that doesn't mean chanting about it's acceptable either so I think I'm entirely justified in expressing my thoughts as I have, thank you.
It's not the best example, but Sean Long is regularly abused and called "Gypo" and suchlike. I don't think that's particularly fair either, but it's not malicious. |

Well the reports would be wrong then. I was smack in the middle of the East Stand for the Crusaders game last month and there was not 1 single chant directed towards Mr Thomas. |
