In a stroke of political genius the New Age "philosopher" and sometime coach of the London Broncos, Tony Rea, sacked the club's best player from the captaincy last week. Rea replaced Gower with Tony Clubb, a young prop forward who rarely plays because of injury proneness.
The result is that Craig Gower, a talented and dedicated scrum half, who has played for NSW and Australia many times, has decided to return to the NRL immediately to play for Newcastle Knights, even though he is not guaranteed a starting place in the team. Another result is that London Broncos will have no playmaker and are guaranteed to retain last place for the rest of this season. The club, which is losing fans at a rapid rate, may even fold before season's end.
The man who hired Rea is the club's owner David Hughes. This was despite the fact that Rea had been removed as coach of London by former owner Ian Lenagan in 2006 because of Rea's inability to perform the coaching role successfully.

| For those who missed it:
According to the BBC, last Saturday evening, after the London Broncos surrendered a 30-16 lead and ended up with a 30-30 draw with Castleford, the head coach of London Broncos, Tony Rea uttered the following sentences:
"We have had a really progressive week and I am confident there are some good times ahead for this group."
"I was delighted with our effort and we were fantastic all the way through."

| Tony Clubb plays second row or centre, is an England International, currently being chased by St.Helens.
He's also nearly 26, he's played 147 Super League games in 7 and a half seasons, that's 20 games per season pretty much, and includes the first two seasons when he was a teenager playing 18 games in his first 2 seasons.
Since then he's played
2012: 24
2011: 27 (ever present)
2010: 27 (ever present)
2009: 21
2008: 23

Clubb has been much less present in 2013.
In any case he is not a patch on Craig Gower, who has played his heart out for the team in one and a half seasons, and has endured the fact that some members of his team are not of professional quality.
Rea effectively humiliated the best player the club has had in years.
One can speculate that there may have been ill feeling, or unpleasant words exchanged between Rea and Gower, and that Rea was showing who is the boss. If so Rea's malice has effectively wrecked the club's playing ability, and perhaps doomed its very existence.

| Maybe Rea knew Gower wanted to leave and maybe Gower had asked to go to the knoghts hence Rea dropping him as captain.
I find it hard to believe Gower got dropped on Saturday and managed to engineer a move by Tuesday unless wheels were already turning
Big loss either way but a player like Gower will be in demand

| Do you really think Gower would find a club in the NRL within a week of losing the captaincy?
It reads more to me that he was approached by the Knights, asked to be released early from his contract and as a result of that Rea chose Clubb as the new captain knowing Gower was on his way.
Even just listening to the muppets at Sky, they've been going on about how Gower has been linked to the NRL and asking for a release from his contract for the past couple of weeks.

| I said at the time of his appointment that the reappointment of Rea was a disaster waiting to happen and nothing ive seen since then has changed my opinion.

| Gower's manager could have easily found an interested club within a week. These managers are permanently on the phone to coaches and CEOs for various members of their stables. Nothing has been signed yet. They are still negotiating.
It is odd that he would go to Newcastle, which already has several players contending for the halves positions. It smells to me like an "any port ina storm" decision
But if in fact Gower wanted to leave before he was dropped as captain, it still reflects on the quality of the club and the coach. He tried his heart out every week and yet he was surrounded by several players who could not or would not tackle.
The club is built on rotten foundations of incompetence and lack of professionalism at every level.

| His manager has been touting him around the NRL for months. Only injury to gidley has now given him a sniff. He's a standing joke in this part of the world.
