| Yikes. Contracts really aren't worth the paper they're written on if he's able to walk away like this.

Why?
What`s clever about letting someone break their contract in this way after they already agreed terms?

If there's a clause in the contract that says he can walk away like this, then they're very much worth the paper they are written on.

Yeah that's a fair point. Be interesting to see what happens now that GH has said there is no such clause, though.

I presume the frivolity may be more to do with Agar coming in, rather than Furner reneging (allegedly).
If true, maybe Hetherington could put up a fight, ala Segeyaro.

I would assume so too, and just because Furner "might" be South's first choice doesn't mean he will accept the offer and go back on his deal anyway
Interesting point re: putting up a fight though, realistically what could he do? A club holds a players registration as well as their contract which makes it a slightly different situation (hence why even when Segeyaro refused to come back Leeds had power to stop him playing elsewhere). As far as I'm aware this doesn't apply to coaches so there is probably little they could do to stop him taking the Souths job if he wanted it.
Don't get me wrong, legal-wise they would have a very good case for big compensation from Souths for breaking that contract if he did decide to go back on his deal, and would undoubtedly win the case. But beyond that, I don't think they could stop him in the same way they technically could in the Segeyaro contract. Possibly the only way would be if the NRL refused to sanction it which I very much doubt would happen.
Would be sad if he did go back on a deal so soon after signing it and reflect quite poorly on his character imo, but if he decided not to come to England and not to coach Leeds I don't think GH could do much about it other than get a few quid from Souths in compo

Has Furner actually started working for Leeds? I thought I read he started in November. If so, no breach of contract, no compensation?

| Tricky one.
As a Rhinos fan, he should absolutely honour his contract and head on over.
But if I were in his position, with a chance to stay where I am but into the role I ultimately want to end up in (but now), then it's hard to begrudge him changing his mind. Especially as it's a massive undertaking shifting his family round the world, it's not like it's a new job down the road.
Either way Leeds need to get an answer tomorrow and move on if required. Can't let this drag on or Agar really be our head coach...
