The GB Teachers face the GB students for the first time in only their second ever Steeden Cup game.The Teachers showed glimpses of potential in their first game but were eventually overwhelmed by the GB Police 46-6. Despite this the Teachers side has recruited several new players from the NCL, due to Steeden Cup exposure and will be hoping their arrival will bolster the side. The Teachers are huge underdogs to the highly fancied and able students side, coached by former Bramley and Leeds Academy coach, Paul Fletcher. However, the students will have one eye on the plane to the southern hemisphere in June and the teachers will hope their size and physicality will counter the speed and skill of the students. It promises to be an exciting clash.

The TRLA has announced a 26 man squad for the Steeden Cup game with the GB students at Broughton Park RU, 7.30pm on Wednesday. All players will play as the GB Students are using their entire touring squad in preparation for their southern hemisphere trip next month.

The squad is Captained by Lancashires Neil Bourke. He is joined by; Matt Stafford, Scott Low, Paul Lorenzen, Scott Porteous, Greg Mannion, Paul McDowell, Tom Lever, Paul Leighton, Mick Cassidy, Tony Doyle, David Patterson, Ross Elliot, Mark Brennan (All Lancs), Tony Fretwell, Richard Leese, Brad Conway, Jonny Summers, Paul Fairhurst, Darren Greenwood, Andy Wormald (All Yorkshire) Steve Woodburn, Craig Wells, Charlie Woan (All Cumbria) Marc Simon (London) Dai Pugh (Wales)

whys it being played at a union ground?

Basically, our first game was against Mancunians Rugby League who play there and the link came from there. However, we now train at Saddleworth ARLFC with it being more central for the Yorkshire based players, so our next home game which will probably be against the GB Fire Service will probably be there.

How many lads in the teachers side weren't teachers? How does the eligability work?

Did Steve Woodburn play? This guy is the don. Took a school, where the kids had never played rugby before to nw champions within a couple of years.

Steve Woodburn did indeed play!!! The score was 46-6 to the GB Student RL. to be honest, we are made up with that as we did fear the worst a little. The GB students basically get to train full time with excellent sport science support and every player could easily slot into the championship. So for us it was an excellent result all in all.

in response to the previous question, in our 26 man Steeden Cup squad all are eligable. Its not a Teachers RL side if they dont!!!! Qualification is Teachers, Teaching Assistant and student teachers. Not community coaches though who go into schools.

Of the 26, 3 are student teachers, 5 are teaching assistants and 17 are full time qualified teachers. Eligibility is critical to us to ensure the confidence of our sponsors the NASUWT and of course the validity of the whole project. Ringers would ruin it all!
